Alternative Media in the Information Era (YMGA360)
This course introduces theoretical approaches, concepts and the forms of alternative media both in terms of literature and practices. The course covers approaches like the community media, alternative media as alternative to mainstream media; the notion of counter-hegemonic media, the rhizomatic media and citizens’ journalism, also analyses also alternative content, alternative channels, alternative sources and alternative values. Considering storage and transmission technologies (such as, for example, satellite transmission, CDs, DVDs, videos, records, computer hard disks, fibre optic cables, the internet and social media environment, the course will bring cases on human rights, environmental movement, civil rights, in different forms such as radio, press, TV, internet, street art video and film performance.
