We are deeply saddened to hear of the fire that broke out on Sunday, May 17, 2020 in the Tepebaşı region of Güzelyurt district at noon and progressed to Kalkanlı, causing the destruction of thousands of acres of land and forests with hundreds of age-long olive trees.
The fire which also threatened METU Northern Cyprus Campus by reaching its borders caused serious destruction both to the vegetation and animals living in nature.
This grave incident, during which a significant part of the lungs of Northern Cyprus have been destroyed, showed us once again how important it is to protect nature and kind of measures to be taken in this respect.
As the Eastern Mediterranean University, we sincerely hope that sad events as such no longer occur. We wish our local community, the METU Northern Cyprus family and our country a speedy recovery.
