The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Ersin Tatar visited Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) with his delegation. The visit, during which the latest developments and measures to be taken before the opening of the New Academic Year were discussed, took place on Thursday, 24 September, 2020 at 09:30 a.m..
In a statement made to the press before the meeting, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın first emphasized the success of EMU regarding the increase in student numbers this year. Stating that there have been various developments pertaining to the pandemic process, Prof. Dr. Hocanın noted that the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected the whole world, was kept under control with the measures taken by the government at different times in the TRNC. Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın also expressed his hope of overcoming this process in cooperation. Stating that EMU is a state university and they always feel the support of the state, Prof. Dr. Hocanın thanked Prime Minister Ersin Tatar and the state officials and emphasized that, as a result of the support of the state and EMU's own efforts, steps have been taken in cooperation towards a safer future. Hoping that the public will protect the state university EMU in this context, Prof. Dr. Hocanın added that the cooperation will continue to alleviate the economic problems experienced after the pandemic. Prof. Dr. Hocanın ended his speech by thanking Prime Minister Ersin Tatar for his visit.
Dr. Özcenk: “We are Also Aware of Our Social Responsibilities”
EMU Board of Trustees President Dr. Erdal Özcenk stated that the TRNC has also been affected during the COVID-19 pandemic currently affecting the whole world, but that the TRNC government successfully managed this process. Expressing that they are carrying out serious work for face-to-face education, Dr. Özcenk announced that an online education decision was taken in line with some difficulties experienced due to reasons beyond the control of EMU. Expressing that they hope for face-to-face education, Dr. Özcenk added that they are aware of their social responsibilities in addition to education and that they also consider the economy, and that they can offer face-to-face education or blended education if the conditions are met.
Başbakan Tatar: “EMU Represents the TRNC in the Academic Field”
In his speech, TRNC Prime Minister Ersin Tatar expressed his satisfaction with the increase in new enrollments at EMU and highlighted the fact that EMU is representing the TRNC in the academic field in the world. Prime Minister Tatar wished EMU's continued success. Expressing his thoughts on face-to-face and online education, which is the current agenda, Prime Minister Tatar emphasized that their priority is to protect the health of the people. Expressing that their aim is to bring the students to the island, Prime Minister Tatar stated that students will be brought to the island gradually with quarantine conditions and that they aim to carry out higher education, which makes a serious contribution to the economy, without risking public health.
