The announcement made by EMU-CWS on the workshop included the following statement:
“Violence against women is not a private or family problem but instead, it is a violence against human rights that is based on gender at its roots and that causes physical, sexual and psychological harm in women; pressure for women in their social and private lives; and arbitrary limitation of women’s freedom. TRNC Parliament took the first step by approving the European Council Agreement on the Prevention of Violence and Domestic Violence against Women and Fight against These (İstanbul Agreement) dated December 5th 2011. We, as EMU-CWS, are aware that the Agreement is only the first step and our responsibility for taking this step further. Thus, we are organizing a closed workshop on “Roles and Responsibilities of the Local and Central Management and Non-governmental Organization in Preventing Violence against Women” on March 12th 2014 with the collaboration and support of the members of parliament, public and private institutions, non-governmental organizations, law and health implementer, security forces, academicians and unions. The aim of this workshop is to determine the policy and action fields for problems encountered in preventing violence against women; roles, responsibilities and clarifying these responsibilities of institutions.
We believe that, preventing violence against women can take place when the relationships of the dominant governments are replaced with equality. Women can only be granted the chance of living free of violence and social space can be more liveable and honourable for all genders when women are not seen as the ‘other’ but as equal and autonomous individuals.”
