Success of EMU Students at Teknofest

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Engineering, Information Systems Engineering Program student Furkan Batı and Computer Engineering Program students Deniz Demir and Cemre Yeşil’s team titled ASHINA completed the ‘Flying Car Simulation Competition’ organized within the scope of Teknofest, the biggest technology festival of Türkiye, in first place. This year, EMU students achieved a total score of 79,27 at the Flying Car Simulation Competition, one of the competitions annually organized since 2019 within the body of Teknofest which hosts thousands of competitors, 40 different competitions and various performances.

Delivering algorithm presentations at the finals organized in Antalya on 5-8 September, 2024, EMU’s ASHINA team become the top place winning team, leaving the other 14 universities behind, among which were Middle East Technical University (METU), Yıldız Technical University and Boğaziçi University. The aim of ‘Flying Car Simulation Competition’ is ensuring the real life adaptation of flying car systems. In this regard, the competitors are provided with a simulation platform where a 3D city is designed and modelled. This city consists of various places such as buildings, forbidden zones, landing spaces and charging stations. The algorithm asked from the participants of the competition is to take the flying car from the take-off point and transport it to the end-point by surpassing all the obstacles, mechanical failures and emergency situations.

In previous January, EMU students applied for the competition, and by March, they submitted their preliminary design reports. Once the scores for these reports were released in May, they advanced successfully to the final report stage. Teams moving on to the final phase were granted access to a simulation environment, which enabled them to begin developing their algorithms. At the beginning of July, the EMU students presented a demo scenario video along with their final design reports based on their prepared algorithms. On 16 July the students received an invitation for the final stage, scheduled to take place in Antalya on 5-8 September, 2024. At the finals in Antalya, the EMU ASHINA Team completed their algorithm presentation and final scenarios successfully, securing the title of champions.

In his remarks regarding the topic, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç expressed the university’s pride in the achievement of its students, saying; “This achievement obtained in the most important technology competition of Türkiye is significant and a source of pride. I wholeheartedly congratulate our students and our academic staff members whom contributed greatly in the training process of our students. Our students’ success signifies the quality of academic education in our University. I wish our students continuous success in their future endeavours.”

The Award Ceremony of Teknofest Competition will take place in Adana Şakirpaşa Airport on 2-6 October, 2024. EMU students Furkan Batı, Deniz Demir and Cemre Yeşil will receive their first place award during the said ceremony.
