A “Down Syndrome Awareness Day” event led by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Special Education Club, was organized on Friday, 21 March 2025 between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at the Atatürk (CL) Square. The event was held with the contributions of Green Crescent Club, ultrAslan UNI Eastern Mediterranean, Children’s Rights Club, Folk Dance Community and Beşiktaş Fan Club, as well as the EMU Unit for Students with Disabilities. As part of the said event, students of Ziyamet Special Education School and Ötüken Special Education School were hosted at EMU.
“Our Only Difference is +1”
Delivering a speech at the event, EMU Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu stated that they had gathered for a very special cause and said, “First and foremost, I congratulate our student clubs. Today, we hosted two special education centers. On 21 March – Down Syndrome Awareness Day, we remind everyone that the only difference is +1 and that we are all the same. It's important to raise awareness on this topic and support individuals with Down syndrome in integrating into society. I sincerely appreciate your compassion on this matter”.
The event included a variety of activities designed to support individuals with Down syndrome in exploring their potential and engaging more with society. Guests had a wonderful time participating in face painting, exciting games, music, and creative crafts.
