Eastern Mediterranean University, Health Sciences Faculty, in collaboration with Cyprus Turkish Diabetics Association, organised “2015 Cyprus Turkish Diabetics Workshop” at 9:30 a.m. on 20 November 2015. Taking place at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center, the workshop hosted discussions on the situation of diabetics at the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The event commenced with a moment of silence, the national anthem and EMU Promotional Film. Cyprus Turkish Diabets Association Coordinator Caner Arca delivered a speech and stated that the statistical information regarding diabetics indicate that the disease has gone through a dramatic increase during the recent years. Arca also added that regarding patients numbers between 2013 and 2014, there was an increase of around 33 million worldwide. Arca finally stated that the workshop will yield valuable information on the prevention of the disease and what patients should do.
Following Arca, founder of the Turkish Diabets Association Prof. Dr. Temel Yılmaz provided detailed information about diabetics and stated that it is a growing health problem throughout the world. Providing information about the number and situation of the patients with diabetics in Turkey, Prof. Dr. Yılmaz added that important factors increasing the disease are immobile lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits and stress.
European Diabetics Federation, European Zone upcoming term chair Prof. Dr. Şehnaz Karadeniz delivered a talk highlighting the important problem of diabetics both in Turkey and throughout the world. Adding that around 415 million diabetics patients, Prof. Dr. Karadeniz put forth that diabetics is a chronical diesease.
In her speech, EMU Health Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç provided information about diabetics and diabetics patients and added that the workshop will pose important contributions in fighting diabetics.
TRNC Ministry of Health Basic Health Services Department Director Dr. Emine Güllüelli stressed the importance of the prevention of diabetics and protection from it. Adding that diabetics may be observed at any age group, Dr. Güllüelli also provided recommendations to avoid the disease. Wishing all participants a successful workshop, Dr. Güllüelli concluded her speech with the slogan “Park the Car, Leave the Elevator and Step into a Healthy Life”.
In his address, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam provided examples from his own life and stated that like the majority of the population, he also cannot pay special attention on certain things essential for a healthy life. Stressing the rapid increase of diabetics, Prof. Dr. Osam added that the workshop will definitely yield beneficial results in the prevention of the said disease.
TRNC Parliamentary Speaker Dr. Sibel Siber stated the importance of the said workshop and added that “quality life is healthy life”. Dr. Siber also put forth that government support is essential for a healthy life. Dr. Siber concluded her speech by saying that the establishment of healthy cities are necessary for healthy generations.
Among topics discussed in the workshop were “Protective Treatment in the Prevention of and Protection from Diabetics”, “Controlling and Prevention of Complications Occuring Due to Diabetics”, “Increasing the Quality of Diabetics Care and Monitoring”, “Economical and Financial Methods of Diabetics”, “The Need for Diabetics Information Systems and National Recording Systems”, “Evaluations from the Patient Perspectives, Strengthening the Patient Rights”, “Raising Public Awareness in Diabetics” and “Training of Health Teams, Society and the Patient”. The said workshop finished with the presentation and evaluation of joint reports for each topic of discussion.
