The Atatürk Ideology Club operating under Eastern Mediterranean University Social and Cultural Activities Directorate hosted a conference entitled “An Analysis of the Current Foreign Policies in the light of Atatürk’s Foreign Policies”. Delivered by the 26th Chief of General Staff of Turkey İlker Başbuğ, the conference took place at Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Hall at 2:00 p.m.on 25 April 2016.
In his opening address, Atatürk Research and Application Center Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Cicioğlu thanked all attendees and expressed his pleasure in hosting İlker Başbuğ in EMU.
In his presentation, Başbuğ thanked everyone for their participation and expressed his pleasure in delivering a conference at the most prominent and oldest university of the TRNC. Taking the audience’s attention to the date of the 25th of April, the starting day of Çanakkale wars, Başbuğ added that the first place Mustafa Kemal showed his military skills was Çanakkale.
In his presentation, Başbuğ also talked about Atatürk’s foreign policy and current foreign policies of Turkey. Başbuğ highlighted the aim and importance of national politics. Başbuğ also gathered the views of the audience on the foreign policy of Turkey should be.
Talking about the recently increasing terrorism incidents in Turkey, Başbuğ highlighted the role and effect of political developments in Syria and Iraq on the terrorism attacks in Turkey.
Stressing the fact that mistakes made or steps taken in foreign policy are irreversible, Başbuğ provided information on wrong applications of foreign policy with a special focus on Cyprus Conflict. At the end of the presentation, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam presented a plaque of appreciation to Başbuğ.
Başbuğ’s Visit to Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam Prior to the Conference
Prior to the conference, Ilker Başbuğ paid a visit of courtesy to EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam. During the visit, Başbuğ expressed his pleasure in visiting Eastern Mediterranean University, on which he received detailed information from Prof. Dr. Osam. Among notable officials present at the meeting were President of the Board of Trustees Mehmet Bayram, Vice Rectors, Coordinators, Chair of EMU Ataturk Research and Application Center and EMU Atatürk Ideology Club Chair.
