Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam featured as a guest on the Famagusta Walled City Association’s (MASDER) “Famagusta Talks” event which took place at 10:30 on the 23rd of November 2019. A different “Famagusta Talks” event is held every Saturday. Speaking at the event which took place at MASDER’s head office, MASDER President Rıfat Yalınç expressed that they are very happy to be hosting EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam whilst indicating that they are in collaboration with EMU on a number of different projects.
Provided Information about EMU
EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam started the talk by providing the guests with information about EMU. Touching upon the stream of students, accommodation, academic achievements, mission and vision, financial affairs, international success and projects Prof. Dr. Osam highlighted the importance of the flow of students to the country. Indicating that the uncertain number is currently around 85 thousand students Prof. Dr. Osam stated that the students of every university are included in this number
“EMU Is Being Preferred More”
Prof. Dr. Osam went on to underline that especially in recent years EMU is being preferred by Turkish Cypriot students. Proving a reminder that EMU is an internationally successful university, Prof. Dr. Osam stated that in 2019 there was a decrease in the number students that were placed via the Assessment Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) for the other big four universities in the TRNC whilst there was a 12.8% increase from last year for EMU. Moving on to accommodation, Prof. Dr. Osam indicated that there are five EMU dormitories with a total capacity of 1,331. Noting that there are some issues with some of the privately-owned campus dormitories Prof. Dr. Osam stated that the judicial process has started in order to terminate their contracts.
Prof. Dr. Osam also addressed the university’s academic and scientific publications whilst highlighting their importance. Clarifying the university’s functional agreements and memberships Prof. Dr. Osam indicated that they have ongoing academic projects. Prof. Dr. Osam provided extensive information about these projects such as the joint project being ran with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ministry of Health.
