Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) once again featured as the top university of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in the Sustainability Rankings 2025 list by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an institution that ranks universities based on their ability to tackle the world’s largest environmental, social, and governance challenges.
The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025 was announced on Tuesday, 10 December 2024 at 12:00 p.m. Total of 1,743 universities from 107 countries were included in the said ranking. The number of universities included in the list has increased by 346 compared to last year’s number. EMU significantly advanced its position in the 1101-1150 band last year, securing the 868th spot worldwide in sustainability rankings.
The University of Toronto from Canada claimed the top spot globally, while ETH Zurich from Switzerland ranked second. Lund University from Sweden and the University of California Berkeley from the United States shared third place. A total of 37 universities from the Republic of Türkiye made the ranking, with EMU securing the top position among the two universities from the TRNC.
Ranked 868th in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2025, EMU achieved its highest score in the Equality category under Social Impact, securing the 407th position globally. Renowned for its excellence in scientific research, EMU was ranked 689th in Environmental Research under the Environmental Impact category. In the overall rankings, EMU placed 854th in Social Impact, 873rd in Management, 993rd in Environmental Impact, and 868th overall. The success certificates were presented to EMU by Ben Sowter, Senior Vice President of QS.
Making remarks on this achievement, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç noted that EMU, as a state university, always realizes the firsts in the country and it continues to serve as a guiding force for improving the nation’s higher education. Stating that EMU is not only an institution of higher education, rather it is a huge university universally contributing to resolve social challenges in the country, region and world, Prof. Dr. Kılıç said; “EMU continues its efforts in line with its sustainability objectives to help create a more sustainable and livable world. Last year, we became the first university from our country to be included in the QS Sustainability Rankings. This year, we proudly represent our country as the leading university on this prestigious list. Moving from the 1101-1150 band we were in last year, we have steadily advanced toward our goals and now rank 868th in the world. EMU’s consistent top-tier performance in various global rankings is not coincidental. This success belongs to all of EMU’s staff and students.
