Our Mission
The Department of Foreign Language Education is the oldest as well as the founding department of the Education Faculty; between 1999-2000 the Department played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Education Faculty at EMU. Since its establishment in 1995 the department has produced over 1.000 BA, MA and Ph D graduates from 14 nationalities; in 2015, the Department of Foreign Language Education celebrated its 20th anniversary. The Department’s mission is to provide contemporary tertiary education, in line with the University mission statement, to maintain quality standards in teaching and research at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to keep abreast of the academic developments and professional innovations, and to meet the educational challenges in the globalizing world.

Departmental Facilities
The Department of Foreign Language Education is an institutional member of 2 major professional organizations, International Association of Teachers to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL). Therefore, the Department students and staff can benefit from a range of TESOL and IATEFL publications for their research, studies, and projects. The Department organizes various socio-cultural activities as well as International Foreign Language Education Conferences, workshops, and symposia. It has 2 Seminar Rooms for self-study, and a library. The Department Library located on the departmental premises has acquired over 200 classic as well as the most recent and pertinent academic and professional resources, and it has become one of the premier departmental research libraries at EMU.

Programs
The Department offers an undergraduate program of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in ELT, 2 postgraduate programs (with Thesis and Project-based) leading to the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in English Language Teaching, as well as a postgraduate program leading to the Ph D degree in English Language Teaching. The target profile of the BA program is English language teachers at the elementary and secondary levels of pre-university education, as well as English teachers at the preparatory and freshman levels of tertiary education. The Department takes into account requirements of contemporary English language teaching through the provision of the relevant professional as well as vocational courses. At the culmination of the BA Program, career-integrated studies are complemented and enhanced through school experience and teaching practice which provide valuable input and opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge and skills to practice.
The Department of Foreign Language Education has also well-established programs of postgraduate study. Over the past decades the Department has served as an academic advisory and training centre for English language teachers at EMU as well as in the local education system. The vast majority of the English language teachers at EMU, many teachers in primary and secondary schools in TRNC have obtained their graduate degrees from the Foreign Language Education Department.
Quality Education
The Department of Foreign Language Education has always been committed to maintaining and developing international standards of quality in teaching and research at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to training independent, creative, confident and competent professionals who will play important educational roles in today’s globalized world. In February 2014 the BA program of the Foreign Language Education Department was accredited by AQAS-Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programs based in Germany.
Career Opportunities
Recently, the BA English Language Teaching graduates have successfully performed in state examinations for English language teaching positions at the elementary and secondary levels of the state educational system in TRNC and Turkey; they have also been preferred in the private sector. In terms of other career options, English Language Teaching graduates also get jobs in various state and private institutions as translators / interpreters and counselors. Those graduates who meet admission requirements for postgraduate programs are admitted either by EMU or universities overseas. Thus, they gain opportunities for advanced academic studies in the field; they compare favourably with other candidates and improve their job opportunities.
