EMU Graduates Bid Farewell to the City with the Traditional Torchlight Procession

Eastern Mediterranean University’s (EMU) Graduates of the 2023-2024 Academic Year Spring Semester bid farewell to the city of Famagusta with the traditional Torchlight Procession on Monday, 1 July, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. The graduates walked from in front of Famagusta Development Academy to the Famagusta Walled city with their gowns and torchlights.

EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe, Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu and Prof. Dr. Ali Öztüren, Faculty Members, administrative personnel and families of the graduates also participated in the event walking alongside the graduates. The nearly 1-hour long graduation walk ended at the Namık Kemal Square where the participants watched a folkdance performance by İnönü Youth Center Folkdance Society.

In the said event, top student of EMU Faculty of Engineering as well as the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mustapha Taha and, the top student of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Psychology Aemel İmran delivered speeches, expressing their happiness and excitement. The graduates concluded their speeches by saying, “As the 2024 EMU graduates, the future exists for us to shape”.

In his speech, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Kılıç addressed all graduates, expressing that each one shines brightly and emphasized his heartfelt congratulations to all. Prof. Dr. Kılıç mentioned that pursuing higher education at EMU also means being in a historic city like Famagusta, and he believes that encountering its history and creating memories here contributes to life experiences. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Kılıç pointed out that EMU strives to be a university where scientific values and critical thinking prevail, and that this is not only the duty of the academic staff but also of the students. Prof. Dr. Kılıç noted that achieving a university’s true goals requires a common consciousness and joint effort, highlighting that the city in which the university is located is also part of this. Stressing that the city and the university must always act together Prof. Dr. Kılıç emphasized that Namık Kemal Square, which has witnessed many historical events, was to witness EMU graduates that day. Prof. Dr. Kılıç concluded his speech by congratulating all the graduates. Following the speeches, the enthusiastic crowd continued the graduation celebrations with music performance by a DJ.
