2nd National Prosthetics and Orthotics Symposium organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in cooperation with the Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Association, Bilimop and Ottobock commenced on December 6, 2019 at 09:00 a.m. with an opening ceremony which took place at Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Conference Hall.
Taking place under the theme ‘Diabetic Foot’, the said symposium will continue on 7 December 2019. Following the presentations made by academicians and field experts in line with the scientific program, workshops will be held on the second day of the symposium under the supervision of instructors.
During the conference which started with a moment of silence and the national anthem, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and Symposium Chair Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç welcomed all those participating in the symposium and highlighted the importance of the symposium which is participated by experts working in this field both in the Republic of Turkey and the TRNC. Prof. Dr. Malkoç also emphasised the significance of the symposium’s theme, which is ‘Diabetic Foot’ and added that the scientific studies to be presented in the event will shed light on many important issues.
Ottobock Turkey General Manager Orkun Taşkın also delivered a speech and expressed his satisfaction in being in EMU and highlighted the importance on the evaluation of ‘Diabetic Foot’ issue in the light of scientific data.
General Director of ‘Bilim Ortopedi’ and Executive Board Member of Turkish Orthopedic Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics Osman Söyler thanked all those organising the symposium and added that the issue of diabetics is a very important one. Wishing everyone a successful symposium, Söyler stated that the symposium will yield productive outcomes. Following the opening addresses, EMU Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education, Music Teaching Program students entertained the participants with a musical performance.
Multidisciplinary Approach
Chaired by Prof. Dr. Yavuz Yakut and Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç, the first panel titled “Multidisciplinary Approach in the Management of Diabetics’ was followed by the second panel titled “Treatment of the Diabetic Foot’ by Prof. Dr. Gülden Polat and Assist. Prof. Dr. Ender Angın.
Then, another panel titled “New Technology in Orthosis and Wound Treatment’ and chaired by Prof. Dr. Nur Tunalı and Assist. Prof. Dr. Yasin Yurt was held. The first day of the symposium ended with a panel titled “Care and Rehabilitation” by Prof. Dr. E. Handan Tüzün and Sen. Inst. H. Onur Karakuş.
Workshops on the Second Day
2nd National Prosthetics and Orthotics Symposium will continue on 7 December 2019 with two workshops taking place with the participation of instructors. The first workshop to be delivered by Prof. Dr. Gülden Polat, Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç and Sen. Inst. İlker Yatar will focus on exercising in diabetics. The participants will receive information on the role of exercise in diabetics (which patient? in what condition? when?), application of exercise tests and development of an exercise program. The second workshop to be offered by Dr. Hakan Uysal, Assist. Prof. Dr. Yasin Yurt and CPO Reyhan Tuygun will focus on orthotics in diabetes. Participants will be trained on orthosis, off loading and pedobarographic analysis.
