Architecture
The 6th International Design Week of the Faculty of Architecture of Eastern Mediterranean University (IntDW2016-EMU) is going to take place between 16-20th of May 2016 under the collaboration of the Faculty of Architecture and the Design Club of Eastern Mediterranean University. Since 2010, Design Week activities are being organized around a central theme for the purpose of drawing attention to significant issues in that field/topic through the participation of selected key professionals, artists and academics that works in the realm of architecture and design. This helps the generation of an interdisciplinary platform where exchange of ideas and experiences, and stimulation of production at an international yet diverse platform take place. Another aim of the Design Week has been to strengthen the contribution of students of architecture and interior architecture in the organization of the event through the strong voice of the Design Club, an association of design students.
The organization team of the 6th International Design Week /EMU announces this year’s theme as 3S: “SOUND-SPACE-SOUL” where the relationship and analogy between music/sound art/sound design and space as well as the spirit of place and its influence on the body and soul shall be explored in many aspects through the contribution of academicians, artists and other professionals from various disciplines.
This year we are honored to host the Turkish architect, planner, industrial product designer and artist Yılmaz Zenger, who currently designs furniture, mechanics and electronics as well as spending time on lecturing and organizing workshops to contribute to architectural education. His presence will contribute to the event through panel discussions on the first day and a workshop organization for architecture and interior architecture students entitled To Sculpt a negative form, the sound of space where students shall be encouraged to design and build real scale furnitures.
Another honorary guest of the event is the British architect, founder of the non-governmental organization New Earth UK and Aga Khan Award winner for her dedicated researches and applications on Earth Architecture , Iliona Outram Khalili, who would join the panel discussions on the first day to share her views on the resonance of earth architecture and its close association to creating places with soul. The architect is very well known around the world for the humanitarian work she does for societies who have been negatively influenced by natural catastrophes and/or have low income and therefore socially secluded.
The Turkish Cypriot painter, poet, writer, designer, film maker, art critic Ümit İnatçı, Dean of Faculty of Art and Communication, EMU will be the third panelist at the opening of the event.
Besides, the panel discussions, the 6th International Design Week is enriched with many activities that shall hopefully broaden the outlook of students not only towards architecture, design but life. One of the most exciting benefactors of the event is the Turkish performance artist Burcu Yılmaz, who would be organizing a workshop on Soundpainting - Sensing the Space through Movement and Sound.
Besides these international names, the event shall be hosting local academicians, artists, tai chi and yoga instructors in order to enrich the soul of the event. Amongst these participants are local artist Sibel Kemal Uzun from Girne American University, Turkish architect and academician Lerzan Aras from Lefke European University, Turkish architect and academician Devrim Yücel Besim from Cyprus International University (CIU), Turkish Cypriot Tai Chi and Qigong instructor Tarık Tekman, Turkish Cypriot Yoga Instructor Anıl Özgürün, the Turkish Cypriot architect/academician Seyit Ermiyagil from Eastern Mediterranean University, the Interdisciplinary Workshop group of the Graduate Program of the Department of Architecture of EMU contributed by Kemal Kasapoglu – Olgica Grcheva and Kamyar Lotfi, Kaveh Abdaie, Mohammad Haghighi Fard, Sobhan Hashemzadeh as well as the students of EMU Dance Club Hakki Ulucay and Beste Demirelli who would join the event with a Salsa workshop teaching the soul and spirit of Latin Dance to the students of architecture and interior architecture.
