The Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine’s 2019-2020 Academic Year Opening Ceremony and First Lecture took place on Monday, the 30th of September 2019 at 08:30.
The ceremony commenced with a moment of silence and the national anthem. This was followed by the screening of EMU and the Faculty of Medicine’s promotional films. The screening was followed by a speech delivered by Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine student representative Özde Buda. Buda welcomed all new students to the faculty and provided advice about academic and social activities.
In a speech of his own, EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine Dean (a.) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre Hamurtekin indicated that students will be learning new things throughout their university education and beyond underlining that they will be witnessing people’s pain and happiness whilst learning how to listen, be patient, adapt to changes and feel empathy. Welcoming new students to the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine family, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre Hamurtekin wished them the best of luck in their studies. Following the opening speeches, a musical recital was delivered by EMU Faculty of Edcuation, Department of Fine Arts Education students.
Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine founding Dean Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora underlined that the white coat is symbol of responsibility, emphasizing that wearing the white coat means promising to reduce the pain of people and to be a student for life. Prof. Dr. Gökçora indicated that the white coat symbolizes helping people without discrimination based on religion, language, nationality or gender, never compromising the proffesion’s honour, honesty and not sharing confidential information. Prof. Dr. Gökçora advised students to allocate time to their families, sport, art and children before concluding by stating: “I wish you a healtyh, honourable and happy life in your white coats. May you have a fantastic journey!”
49 Students Wear White Coats
After the opening speeches, 49 students were presented their white coats by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre Hamurtekin, Prof. Dr. Gökçora and EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Facutly of Medicine’s new academic staff. After a cocktail which was held for the new students and academicians to socialize, the ceremony continued with the first lecture delivered by Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics academic staff member Prof. Dr. Şükrü Tüzmen. The first lecture was titled “Molecular Diagnostic Findings in Rare Diseases: Beta – Thalassemia”.
