Eastern Mediterranean University Health Sciences Faculty released a statement on 14 November World Diabetes Day. The statement released by EMU Health Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç reads as follows: “The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) decided to celebrate the 14th of November as World Diabetes Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Fredrick Bantig, who made it possible to treat millions of patients with diabetes by discovering insulin in 1921. The causes and treatment of diabetes now require the adoption of a team-based approach and the development of common strategies around the world. From this perspective, active team understanding plays an important role in the elimination and treatment of risk factors that underlie in the development of diabetes.
2nd National Prosthesis Orthosis Symposium to be Organised
Prof. Dr. Malkoç’s statement continues as follows: “Although the importance is emphasized in the world, the team approach in the treatment of diabetes in our country is not at the desired level yet. However, starting from primary health care services, team approach is extremely important in every step. In this context, EMU Faculty of Health Sciences organizes awareness seminars every year in order to draw attention to diabetes and raise awareness about diabetes. This year we will crown this meaningful day with a symposium. On 6-7 December 2019, the 2nd National Prosthesis Orthosis Symposium the theme of which is “Diabetic Foot” will take place at EMU Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Hall. In this symposium, current developments in the prevention and treatment of diabetic foot as an important complication of diabetes, orthosis applications, rehabilitation after amputation and prosthesis applications will be discussed and shared with a team understanding. On the second day of the symposium, a workshop focusing on the formation of an excercise program for people with diabetes and orthotic treatments in people with diabetes will be held. We will be happy to see you all at this multidisciplinary event which will host doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, dietitians, prosthesis and orthosis technicians and podologists.”
