Eastern Mediterranean University Psychological Counseling, Guidance and Research Center (EMU-PDRAM) and EMU Psychology Students Club organised a conference entitled “A Gender Perspective of International Conflict: The Cypriot Experience” on 4 March 2016.
The conference which was organised with the aim of raising public awareness regarding 8 March International Women’s Day and exploring the roles of women in Cyprus received intensive interest from the students and academics.
South Cyprus, University of Cyprus Political Sciences Department academic staff member and Gender Advisory Team member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Hadjipavlou attended the event as an invited speaker.
The conference which took place under the moderatorship of EMU Psychology Department academic staff member Prof. Dr. Biran Mertan commenced with an interactive discussion on the definition of feminism followed by the concept gender. During the conference, it was also stated that feminist perspectives jointly recognise gender equality as a basic human right.
The effects of the ongoing “Cyprus Conflict” on female problems and rights, health-related and environmental problems, violence against women, sex and human trafficking, refugees, gender discrimination and low employability rates of females were also among the topics of discussion. The conference also featured a video screening on gender roles. At the end of the conference, EMU Psychology Students Club Chair Deniz Şahin presented a plaque of appreciation to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hadjipavlou for her contributions to the event.
