Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), recognized as one of the top universities globally by multiple independent international ranking bodies, has once again accomplished a significant achievement.
On Monday, 11 November 2024, EMU was ranked within the 51-75 band globally in Hospitality and Tourism Management in the 2024 World University Academic Rankings, published by the China-based Shanghai Ranking. Furthermore, the university earned a score of 49.4 in the “Research Impact” category, placing 6th in the world for this field.
EMU is the sole university from both the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Republic of Türkiye to be featured in this ranking for Hospitality and Tourism Management, and it secured the top position on the island of Cyprus. The ranking evaluated about 1,900 universities out of a total of 5,000 institutions worldwide from 96 countries. Moreover, EMU is among the rare universities globally that has been consistently ranked in this field since 2019.
EMU ranked as the 6th in the World in Category of Research Impact
In the 2024 Shanghai Ranking World University Academic Ranking, EMU was assessed across key categories, including “World-Class Faculty”, “World-Class Output”, “High-Quality Research”, “Research Impact”, and “International Collaboration”. The university’s ranking was determined based on its academic publications in top global journals (Q1), international academic awards, citations (excluding self-citations), and its academic partnerships with institutions worldwide, covering the period from 2019 to 2023. Consistently making our country proud with its scholarly achievements, EMU secured 6th place globally in the “Research Impact” category for Hospitality and Tourism Management, with a score of 49.4.
EMU achieved 41st place globally in the Hospitality and Tourism Management field with a score of 33.8 in the “High-Quality Research” category. It also secured a global ranking within the 70-72 band in the “World-Class Output” category with a score of 25.8. Furthermore, EMU ranked within the 46-57 band worldwide in the “International Collaboration” category, earning a score of 8.4 due to its international partnerships in Hospitality and Tourism Management.
EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç emphasized the importance of EMU’s 6th place global ranking in “Research Impact” for Hospitality and Tourism Management, noting that the university has appeared on the list every year since 2019. Rector Prof. Dr. Kılıç highlighted EMU’s consistent excellence in research quality, with impressive ranks in previous years as well: 7th in 2019, 5th in 2020, 4th in 2021, and 5th in both 2022 and 2023. Prof. Dr. Kılıç pointed out that this success reflects the broad influence of EMU’s scientific work, which is widely read, frequently cited, and actively used by faculty members, students, and industry professionals. Prof. Dr. Kılıç said; “With 16,000 students, many internationally recognized accreditations, and a strong educational reputation, EMU serves as a model university”. Lastly, Prof. Dr. Kılıç congratulated everyone who contributed to this achievement and affirmed that such accomplishments remain a core focus for EMU and will continue to be so.

Shanghai Ranking began releasing world university rankings by academic subject in 2009, and after updating its methodology, introduced the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) in 2017. The 2024 GRAS evaluates universities in 55 subjects within the areas of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. This ranking includes over 1,900 universities out of 5,000 institutions across 96 countries and regions.
