In scope of a protocol signed by the Eastern Mediterranean University and Alsancak Municipality on 27 February 2018 regarding the establishment of Alsancak- Menekşe Region Urban Design Guide, the said guide has been developed as a revolving fund project under the coordination of EMU Urban Research and Development Center (URDC) Chair Prof. Dr. Şebnem Hoşkara and Vice Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nevter Zafer Cömert. Alsancak Municipality and City Planning Department also supported the development of the said project. The urban design guide in question prepared for the Menekşe Region within the boundaries of Alsancak Municipality aims to create a sustainable, safe and environmentally friendly living environment that preserves its urban identity and its unique local characteristics.
The Guide is the First in Northern Cyprus
EMU URDC Chair Prof.Dr. Şebnem Hoşkara stated that the Alsancak Menekşe Region Urban Design Guide will contribute to the preservation of the urban texture with all the built environment values in the region at the urban scale, together with the historical, architectural, environmental and socio-cultural values. Prof. Dr. Hoşkara added that they will ensure the development of urban design principles that will serve the development within the framework of the vision to be determined and the correct design of the structural environment in the process of ensuring this development.
Stating that the guide is the first of its kind prepared in the North of Cyprus in this sense, Prof. Dr. Hoşkara added that it will set an example for other settlements with unique characteristics in the coming periods. Prof. Dr. Hoşkara emphasized that the principles in the said guide are expected to be converted into a legal document by taking into the scope of the execution of the current order, and then to be a part of the zoning plan work to be carried out.
At the same time, the Alsancak Menekşe Region Urban Design Guide and the Youth Street Sample Rehabilitation Project, which summarizes and exemplifies the comprehensive issues in the guide, were delivered to the Alsancak Municipality and the first informative meeting for the public was held. It is expected that the said guide and the project will be shared with stakeholders in meetings with broad participation in the coming days.
