Othello Castle Hosted Legendary Designer Karim Rashid

Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty hosted the 7th International Design Week between 15 and 18 May 2017. During the said week, doyenne of the design world, also known as the pop star of design, Karim Rashid gave a seminar at Othello Castle on Tuesday, 16 May 2017.

Visionary and prolific, Karim Rashid is one of the most unique voices in design today. With more than 4000 designs in production, nearly 300 awards to his name, and client work in over 40 countries, Karim’s ability to transcend typology continues to make him a force among designers of his generation.

During the seminar titled “Ambigious Limits", Karim Rashid talked about how democratic the digital age is in today’s world.  Karim Rashid also talked about the effect of design on the world.

Delivering a speech at the event opening, Dean of EMU Architecture Faculty Prof. Dr. Özgür Dinçyürek stated the faculty’s pleasure and happiness in hosting world famous Karim Rashid.   Thanking all those who contributed to the organisation of  the event, Prof. Dr. Özgür Dinçyürek added that both Famagusta and Othello are undergoing a historical night..

In his seminar, Karim Rashid stated that 9 billion visuals are viewed throughout the world each day, giving independence to creativity in the world we live in. Highlighting his theory as “to create”, Rashid also focused on the essence of creativity for the advancement of humanity. Rashid also added that he is a supporter of democratic design, and that the future can only be shaped with modern criteria. Rashid put forth that when talking about creativity, the first thing coming to his mind is photographers as it requires outstanding creativity. Talking about the rapidly increasing numbers of entreprenurs in the world, Rashid stated that anything can be achieved with determination and passion. Stressing on the fact that digital age is rather democratic, Karim Rashid added that some people believe that the past is better than the current digital age.

At the end of the seminar Karim Rashid was presented a gift and a bouquet of flowers by Dean of Faculty of Architecture Prof. Dr. Özgür Dinçyürek and Vice Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Banu Çavuşoğlu. Among notable names present at the event were Member of the Parliament Hakan Dinçyürek and Mayor of Famagusta İsmail Arter.
