On behalf of Eastern Mediterranean University Atatürk Research and Application Center (EMU-ATAUM), Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe released a message on the occasion of 30 August – Victory Day. The said message reads as follows:
“30 August – Victory Day is a national and official holiday observed annually on the 30th of August in Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and all foreign representative offices. Victory Day commemorates the Great Offensive, which was led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, beginning on 26 August, 1922, and culminating in victory on 30 August, 1922. The battle, also known as the Battle of the Commander-in-Chief due to Atatürk’s leadership, led to the decisive defeat of the Greek army. With the liberation of Izmir on 9 September, 1922, Turkish lands were fully freed from Greek occupation. This day was first celebrated as the Commander-in-Chief Victory in Afyon in 1924 and has been known as Victory Day since 1926.
The 30 August Victory stands as one of the most significant achievements of a nation overcoming adversity through faith, determination, unity, and solidarity. It is celebrated as one of history’s greatest acts of heroism and reflects the Turkish Nation’s steadfast commitment to protecting its land. This pivotal victory not only set the stage for the founding of the Republic of Turkey but also garnered global recognition and respect. On the 102nd anniversary of this momentous day, we pay profound respect and gratitude to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, his fellow commanders, the brave Turkish people, and the revered martyrs who defended their country at great sacrifice. We extend our warmest congratulations to the entire Turkish Nation on Victory Day.”
