The UK-based Times Higher Education (THE), the publisher of the world's most widely-referred university rankings and published, has announced the 2021 Ranking of the Best Young Universities in the World that have started educational activities within the last 50 years. Similar to last year, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), the only university from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to be included in the rankings this year again, ranks within the 251-300 band. The ranking provides a comparison of the younger institutions in terms of publications, citations, quality of education and internationalization.
Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University has been announced as the world leader in the list, where EMU ranks 7th amongst 32 Turkish universities. The increase in the universities of developing countries in the list is worthy of attention. While 34 universities from India, 12 from Malaysia and 8 from China have been included in the ranking, only 4 young universities from the USA were included in the list. Three universities from South Cyprus managed to enter the list. The performance scales from the overall THE World List were used in the THE Best Young Universities Ranking 2021, which ranks young universities under the age of 50 around the world according to their quality of education, scholarly research, bibliographic citations, international visibility and industrial revenue.

Making a statement on the subject, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın expressed his happiness to be informed, by a letter sent to them via THE Editor, that EMU has once again been included in the said ranking. Drawing attention to the fact that EMU, which is a state university, being ranked among the best universities in the world by international independent ranking institutions is an indication of the quality of education and research, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın thanked all EMU staff who contributed to remarkable achievement.
