Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty, Design and Research Center (TASAR) announced the results of the architectural design project contest for Muratağa, Sandallar and Atlılar Martyrs Memorial. The contest took place under the coordination of TASAR and with the support and contributions of TRNC President’s Office, EMU, Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Architects, and Cyprus Turkish Constructors’ Association.
Following a jury evaluation at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center at 2:00 p.m. on 14 January 2016, results of the contest were announced as follows.
First place: Fevzi Özersay (Head of the team ), Nevzat Öksüzoğulları, Feriha Kırmızı and Emrah Acar
Second Place: Belgin Sakallı and Halil Toprakçı
Mention Award: Mukaddes Faslı (Head of the team), Nazife Özay, Beser O. Vehbi, Polat Hançer and Doğa Üzümcüoğlu
The criteria for the projects which have been evaluated in three stages was based on conceptual integrity, coherence with the geography, harmony with climatic data, applicability, being economical, the projects’ correspondence with needs and demands and integrity of the areas.
All projects participating in the said contest were exhibited at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center at 5:00 p.m. on 15 January 2015.
During the exhibition of the projects, Chair of TASAR Assist. Prof Dr. Ercan Hoşkara talked about the stages of the project and added that they obtained positive results. Assist. Prof. Dr. Hoşkara also thanked all those who contributed to the project.
EMU Architecture Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Şebnem Hoşkara expressed the faculty’s pleasure and happiness in taking part in communal projects along with educational and research activities. Prof. Dr. Şebnem Hoşkara also added that along with its educational qualities, the project has posed a positive effect on the community regarding awareness towards the scope of the said project. Stating that this is the first time Eastern Mediterranean University is involved in a project as such, Prof. Dr. Hoşkara thanked all those who took part in the project.
Head of jury Tarkan Davulcu thanked all participants and stated that they are quite pleased with all projects submitted. Famagusta District Governor Şifa Çolakoğlu was also present at the award ceremony.
Chair of TASAR Assist. Prof. Dr. Ercan Hoşkara stated that as part of the work of the Committee on Missing Persons, identity identification procedures of martyrs buried in war cemeteries in Muratağa – Sandallar and Atlılar have been initiated. Prof. Dr. Ercan Hoşkara added that the said committee is expecting to receive the results within a year upon the completion of DNA tests. Once the identity identification has taken place, a separate funeral for each person and family will take place. In this respect, the need for the re-organisation of the existing war cemeteries as well as a museum displaying personal belongings of the deceased has arisen. Assist. Prof. Dr. Hoşkara added that the first leg of the project is expected to be completed by 14 August 2016.
