EMU’s M.S. in Urban Design is basically a research-based program including one project which aims to contribute to the enhancement of the quality of cities. The main objectives of the program are to provide a high quality learning environment and an academic structure for research and development of ideas – a methodological framework which could inform and improve the decisions of practice.
The program addresses urban design as a framework of research and practice, and enables students to develop skills and techniques of communicating urban design that is not adequately dealt in the programs of architecture and planning. It provides knowledge of urban concepts and issues, preparing architects, planners, landscape architects, and other relevant professionals to affect patterns of urbanization, manage urban growth, respond to urban problems and sustain existing urban areas in an interdisciplinary and holistic context.
The program is also intended to act as an introductory vehicle for those wishing to pursue further research at PhD level. The program is run in collaboration with the Master of Urban Design with sharing the First semester design studio and must courses and it’s also in collaboration with the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture at the EMU.
Admission Requirements
The candidates for admission to the Master of Science Program in Urban Design must satisfy the requirements of the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research of the university as well as the Departmental requirements. Candidates for admission to the M.S. in Urban Design Program should have a B.Arch. degree in architecture or in a relevant related discipline.
Documents needed to apply to the programs offered by the Department of Architecture
In addition to the documents specified in the application form, the Department of Architecture also requires:
- A Portfolio [Content of the portfolio includes all research and architectural projects produced in the undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses and other professional skills and performances (in A4, A3 hardcopy or CD format)]
- A curriculum vitae (CV),
- Reference Letter(s),
- A Copy of the last Diploma,
- Transcripts of previous degrees,
- A letter of Intention / proposal (in which the field and reasons of study of the candidates are clearly stated.)
- Master thesis abstract (only for PhD applicants)
- Scientific publications (if any)(only for PhD applicants)
