A collaboration protocol has been signed between Eastern Mediterranean University and Mehmetçik Municipality Zeka Bey Seed Center. Mayor of Mehmetçik Cemil Sarıçizmeli, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and EMU Arts and Sciences Faculty, Biological Sciences Department academic staff member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şükrü Tüzmen signed the said protocol which contains items on exchange of experience in the field, raising awareness on the use of non-GMO seeds, training of farmers on conscious use of seeds and specification and development of local seeds.
Prior to the protocol signature ceremony, Mayor of Mehmetçik Sarıçizmeli stressed the difficulties encountered with GMO seeds throughout the country and added that the said seed center has started producing non-GMO seeds. Zeka Bey Seed Center currently has 41 certified seeds. Sarıçizmeli also highlighted the importance of certifying seeds and, in this respect, invited support from EMU.
EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam extended his appreciation to Sarıçizmeli in establishing an important center as such and expressed his pleasure in collaborating with the said center. EMU Public Relations and Press Office Director Murat Aktuğralı was also present at the protocol signing ceremony.
