The short films prepared by Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Communication Faculty, Radio-TV and Film Studies Department final year students as part of their final projects met their audience at a sublime gala. Amongst the films prepared under the counselling of master director and producer Osman Sınav, the short film “Zaman” written and directed by Ebru Akıncı was selected as the best. As a result of her success Akıncı gained the opportunity to intern next to Osman Sınav.
The students’ films shown at the gala were evaluated by a jury comprising of Osman Sınav, Vice Dean of the Communication Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Ersoy, Radio-TV and Film Studies Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahire Efe Özad, Vice Chair Ahmet Goran, Postgraduate and Doctorate Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tutku Akter, academic staff members Asst. Prof. Dr. Pembe Behçetoğulları, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yetin Arslan, Pembe Tölük and Barçın Boğaç and Bayrak Radio Television Corporation Director Meryem Özkurt.
The opening speech of the event was carried out by Radio-TV and Film Sutides Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahire Efe Özad who stated: “I would like to thank all those who attended this wonderful gala, all of our students and doyenne Osman Sınav for his effort, sacrifice and contribution to our students.”
Award winning film “Evimiz” screened before the gala
The event started with the screening of the film “Evimiz” that came third in the Greenpeace Movement’s 5th Short Film Competition. The film was written Engin Aluç and directed/ produced by Mert Yusuf Özlük who are both EMU Communication Faculty research assistants. Leading thespians Hatice Çapkıner and Edayla Eriş were also in the audience. The film crew was completely comprised of EMU Communication Faculty, Radio-TV and Film Studies graduates.
Magnificent films competed in the gala
Amongst the 23 films prepared by the students the 10 short films Çark” (Yağmur Çelik), “Firkat” (M. Hürrem Kutay ), “İşsizlik” (Fırat Gürakansel), “Zaman” (Ebru Akıncı), “İşte Damat Geliyor” (Emre Demirören), “İyilik” (Nurin Gasimov, Afet Süleymanova, Melek Hüseyinzade), “Kendine Yabancı” (Zehra Bilgiç, Selda Bilgiç), “Kırmızı Balon” (Ali Merdan Doğan), “Eksik Yanım” (Nurseli Korucu), “Viran” (Beste Özdağ ) were screened. The winning film was the film “Zaman” written and directed by Ebru Akıncı. The films “Çark” and“Firkat” finished joint second and the film “İşsizlik” finished third.
“This is my type of worship”
Speaking at the end of the award ceremony, doyenne producer and director Osman Sınav, thanked the students for their efforts, indicating that cinema is at the top of the mountain in the field of arts. Noting that god gave him his ability and knowledge in cinema to pass on to others he stated “Cinema is my type of worship. I find myself here to share my knowledge accumulation with youths. There is no other way I can stand at my last judgment”.
“Nowadays reality is constructed by cinema”
Describing cinema as a visualizing art that witnesses and describes reality Sınav stated: “Humanity’s’ first introduction to itself and to civilization was with visuals drawn onto rocks and cave walls. The trueness of Renaissance was also documented by the work of artists. Nowadays, reality is constructed by cinema.” The event ended with a group photo followed by a cocktail.
