Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Arts & Sciences took first place in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in the publication rankings of journals indexed by Web of Science in 2017. From its foundation in 1986 to 2017, the EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences has taken its well-deserved place among Arts and Sciences Faculties of the TRNC and Turkey, thanks to its 860 publications. The faculty offers high quality study opportunities through 7 departments, namely Mathematics (English), Biological Sciences (English), Translation and Interpretation (English), Psychology (English and Turkish), Physics (English), Chemistry (English) and Turkish Language and Literature.
High Quality Education
In line with its mission and vision of the provision of high quality education and research potential, EMU took its place within the 601-800 band among Turkish universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings during the 2017-2018 Academic Year. Again, according to QS-Stars, which is one of the most important UK-based higher education quality institutions, it has been awarded 5 stars in the field of Education and Facilities. The high quality education offered by the faculty through publications and references is also important in this regard.
Making a Difference with Highly Equipped Laboratories
The Physics I, Physics II, and Mathematics Research Laboratories, launched in 2018 at the EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences, are the biggest indicators of the faculty's teaching and research quality.
EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan highlighted the fact that the faculty has an important place in the research infrastructure of the university and added that the faculty offers the possibility to conduct experiments with students and researchers at Physics I, Physics II and Mathematics Research Laboratory as well as General Chemistry, General Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Psycho-Biology, Cognitive Behavior, Translation, Psycho-Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, Organic Chemistry, Photovoltaics, Thin Film Metrology and three Computer laboratories.
International Membership and Accreditations
Paying special importance to international memberships and accreditations, the EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ Mathematics Department is a member of AMS (American Mathematical Society) and the Psychology Undergraduate Program is a member of TPD (Turkish Psychologists Association). Prof. Dr. Özarslan also put forth that only 11 universities in Turkey have TPD membership. In the TRNC, EMU is the only university to have obtained this accreditation. In addition, Prof. Dr. Özarslan added that the Molecular Biology and Genetics Undergraduate program has been awarded AHPG accreditation in the field of Health Sciences until 2020.
Scientific Events Being Organized
Prof. Dr. Özarslan indicated that during the 2017-2018 Academic Year, the EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences has brought together many experts in their field at scientific events, some of which were the “2nd National Social Psychology Congress”, the “Translation Seminars”, the “7th Documentary Days” and “Our Female Poets from Nigar Hanım To The Present”.
Referring to the importance of bringing together students and field specialists, Professor. Dr. Özarslan emphasized that they created platforms bringing together students and experts such as well-known author Osman Şahin, mathematics prodigy Arran Fernandez and Prof. Dr. Alireza Fazeli as well as world famous scientists Prof. Dr. Bayram Tekin and Prof. Dr Oğuz Akay. Prof. Dr. Özarslan also underlined that graduates can be admitted to post-graduate and doctoral programs at leading universities of the world or that they can easily find a job in the international arena and take part in competitive business environments, thanks to the high quality education and facilities provided by the faculty.
