U.K. based Times Higher Education (THE), the publisher of the world's widely referenced university rankings, announced the world's best universities rankings on Wednesday, 2 September, 2020. Only Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) succeeded in entering the aforementioned ranking by taking its well-deserved place within the 801-1000 band.
In the list featuring a total of 1,527 universities, Eastern Mediterranean University shared the same rank with Istanbul Technical University, Middle East Technical University and Istanbul University after Bilkent University, Boğaziçi University and Özyeğin University. A total of 44 universities from Turkey made it to the said list, but only 11 of them have been ranked amongst the first thousand. As per the island of Cyprus, three universities from South Cyprus and only EMU from the TRNC appeared on the list.

Releasing a statement on the subject, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın stated that they are extremely pleased to have received the letter sent by the THE Editor giving the good news of EMU once again featuring in the aforementioned ranking. Noting that EMU, a state university, provides quality education, Prof. Dr. Hocanın stated that our institution plays an important role in education, research and community service as a university. Prof. Dr. Hocanın also underlined that EMU is one of the most important institutions in the field of higher education. Prof. Dr. Hocanın concluded his statement by saying "I would like to thank all EMU staff who made this remarkable achievement possible."
