1st International Elementary Education Congress organized by Uludağ University took place in Bursa in the past few days. Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Education was represented with a verbal notice during the congress.
EMU Elementary Education Department, Pre-school Teacher Education Post-Graduate Program graduate Specialist Şebnem Hürler presented her study entitled “Perceptions of University Students towards Emotional Abuse” under the counselling of her thesis advisor, Prof. Dr. Elif Yeşim Üstün. The study conducted with total of 810 university students (505 Turkish and 305 International) showed that majority of the students do not get any training (courses, seminars, etc.) during their studies regarding negligence and abuse.
According to the findings of the study, the emotional abuse perceptions of students vary with factors such as gender, parental education and class level. The most interesting result of the study indicated that International students possess higher emotional abuse perceptions than Turkish students. The study suggest that more place should be given to seminars, courses, social responsibility projects in universities on negligence and abuse in order to raise awareness of students who are future parents. Moreover, the study emphasizes the need for a deeper analysis on the emotional abuse perceptions of youngsters.
