7th EMU-CWS International Conference on Gender Studies Begins

The 7th Eastern Mediterranean University Centre for Women’s Studies (EMU-CWS) International Conference on Gender Studies commenced with an opening ceremony at 09:30 a.m. on Thursday, the 10th of October 2019 at the “Arsinoe” Meeting Hall of the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Centre. The ceremony was attended by EMU Vice Rector for Administrative and Technical Affairs Prof. Dr. Naciye Doratlı, European Women Rectors Association (EWORA) Honorary President and Former Istanbul Technical University Rector Prof. Dr. Gülsün Sağlamer, EMU-CWS Director, Conference President and EMU Education Faculty, Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education academic staff member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süheyla Üçışık Erbilen, Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, Department of Geography Vice-Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Murat Yüceşahin, students and academic personnel.

 “Zero Tolerance to All Types of Violence!”

In her opening speech following the screening of EMU’s promotional film and a musical recital by Education Faculty, Department of Fine Arts Education, Music Teaching Program academic staff, EMU-CWS Director and Conference President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süheyla Üçışık Erbilen touched upon their founding purpose and activities. Indicating that they set off with the slogan “Zero Tolerance to All Types of Violence”, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erbilen emphasized that 220 papers have been presented at their annual conference which is  “Gender, Space, Place & Culture” themed this year. In a speech of her own, EMU Vice Rector for Administrative and Technical Affairs Prof. Dr. Naciye Doratlı provided information about the university. Stating that EMU-CWS shines like a star Prof. Dr. Doratlı wished everyone a fruitful conference.

The Conference Attracts Great Interest

Following the opening speeches, European Women Rectors Association (EWORA) Honorary President and Former Istanbul Technical University Rector Prof. Dr. Gülsün Sağlamer delivered a talk titled “The Role of Leadership in the Promotion of Gender Equality in Higher Education and Research”. This was followed by a talk from Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, Department of Geography Vice-Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Murat Yüceşahin titled “Is It a Man’s World? Understanding Feminist Geographies”. The conference which attracted great interest will continue for three days with parallel sessions. Until Saturday, the 12th of October 2019 the 7thInternational Conference on Gender Studies will feature the contributions of numerous valuable speakers. The papers presented at the conference will be published as a book by EMU shortly after the conference.
