Eastern Mediterranean University Center for Women's Studies (EMU-CWS) issued a message on the occasion of 8 March International Women's Day. The said message reads as follows: “8 March, declared as 'International Women's Day' on 16 December 1977 by the United Nations General Assembly, is one of the most important symbols of women's revolt against gender discrimination. 8 March is also an indication of the struggle of women all over the world to achieve equality, security, freedom, better working and living conditions. Women, who struggled against bad working conditions with the slogan of equal pay for equal work 165 years ago, still continue their struggle for equality and freedom on the basis of human rights.
Preventing gender-based discrimination in all areas of life, and gender-based violence would only be possible by fulfilling the requirements of universal standards on gender equality. The way to do this is to implement legal regulations, to activate mechanisms to apply them effectively, and to ensure the availability of multiple policies for this purpose. For this reason, it is extremely important to remember the rights of women and raise awareness on 8 March to solve women's problems.
In the said fight for equality, EMU-CWS continues its activities with an awareness of its social responsibility. On this occasion, we would like to express that we embrace the principle of equality emphasized by the 8 March International Women's Day, with the hope of an equal world where women reach their deserved place in political, social and economic life on the basis of human rights.”
