Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Education, Department of Special Education, Teaching the Mentally Handicapped Undergraduate Program students Vildan Görgün, İrem İbiş, Rabia Doğan, Evin Sunar and Büşra Demirtaş participated in the ‘book reading for the visually impaired’ project under the coordination of their instructor Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazenin Ruso.
The aim of the project was identified as allowing the visually impaired to access books, get them to adopt the habit of reading books and show them that they are not alone. As part of the project, students entered the TRNC Solidarity with the Disabled Association barrier free studio and read books approved by Association President Ömer Suay. The students who made voice recordings for the first time noted that they were at first very excited but later enjoyed the experience. Stating that the level of book reading in a country is indicative of its level of development, the students noted that disabled people shouldn’t be ignored. The students concluded by expressing that their book reading work will be continuing in the future.
